Long View Media began with a simple idea: retirement deserves more than a collection of financial calculations.
Preparing for retirement matters. So does learning how to live it.
Our articles are the foundation of that work. They give us room to develop an idea carefully, explain the reasoning behind it, work through examples, acknowledge exceptions and uncertainty, and create a written resource readers can return to later.
But some ideas also work well when they’re explained rather than read.
That’s why Long View Media has a companion YouTube channel.
One Lesson, Two Ways to Use It
Our videos and articles are designed to work together.
For curriculum topics, we generally begin with the complete Long View Media article. We then adapt that lesson into a companion video.
The video isn’t simply someone reading the article aloud.
Instead, we identify the central lesson and present it in a shorter visual format. Graphics can illustrate comparisons, sequences, choices, calculations, and examples that may be easier to understand when seen on screen.
That makes the video useful on its own.
But it isn’t intended to replace the article.
A short video necessarily leaves things out. The article gives us room for greater detail, qualifications, examples, and context. It also provides something you can search, reread, bookmark, or refer to later.
Think of the two formats as companions.
Watch the video for the lesson. Read the article for the complete discussion.
Or do it in the opposite order.
The Article Comes First
Our normal publishing schedule reflects that relationship.
We publish the new article in the morning.
The companion video follows that afternoon.
That gives readers the complete written lesson first and provides another way to encounter the same subject later in the day.
It also helps us maintain one body of Long View Media material rather than creating separate subjects for the blog and YouTube.
If an article is titled Retirement 104: Replacing the Structure Work Used to Provide, its companion video covers that same Retirement 104 lesson.
The same approach applies to Pretirement.
Over time, the articles and videos build the same progressive curricula.
Pretirement and Retirement
Long View Media currently follows two primary tracks.
Pretirement is about preparing for retirement before leaving work. It includes the PreTire method: practicing life on expected retirement income while you’re still earning a paycheck, then using the difference to strengthen the financial position you’ll carry into retirement.
Retirement is about what happens after the retirement date. It addresses purpose, routines, relationships, money, healthcare, travel, technology, independence, aging, legacy, and the practical question underlying the entire series:
How do we actually live retirement well?
Both curricula begin with lessons 101 through 126.
Those 26 lessons establish the foundation. Later series can return to retirement and pretirement subjects at progressively deeper levels.
The numbering also makes it easier to know where you are and what to explore next.
Why We Use Video
People learn differently.
Some of us would rather spend ten minutes reading.
Others would rather watch a short explanation.
Many of us use both depending on the subject and where we happen to be.
Video also gives us tools that an article doesn’t.
A visual can show how several retirement income sources fit together.
A timeline can make a sequence immediately understandable.
A simple graphic can compare alternatives without requiring several paragraphs.
And sometimes hearing an idea explained makes it click in a way that reading it didn’t.
We want to use each medium for what it does well.
Our Presenter Is AI-Generated
If you’ve watched one of our videos, you’ve met Martin Longview.
Martin isn’t a real person and isn’t the likeness of the person or people behind Long View Media. He’s a fictional AI-generated presenter we use to give the videos a consistent voice and visual identity.
Artificial intelligence also helps us turn Long View Media’s written research and ideas into the visual presentation you see on screen.
We think that distinction should be clear.
The technology is part of how the material is presented. It isn’t the reason for the material.
The ideas, research, editorial judgment, curriculum, and responsibility for what Long View Media publishes remain with Long View Media.
Why Not Just Let AI Make the Videos?
Because our goal isn’t to produce as much content as possible.
It’s to build a useful retirement-education library.
The article establishes the lesson.
The video has to remain faithful to it.
That means preserving important distinctions, examples, cautions, and uncertainty rather than asking an automated system to invent a retirement lesson from a title.
We also review the visual presentation to make sure the graphics are doing useful work rather than merely decorating the screen.
AI makes this kind of small-scale educational publishing possible in ways that would have required a much larger production operation only a few years ago.
But the technology serves the curriculum, not the other way around.
The Videos Are Shorter on Purpose
A complete article can explore side questions and exceptions that would make a short video difficult to follow.
The companion video has a different job.
It should leave you understanding the central idea.
If that idea matters to your situation, the article is there when you want the fuller explanation.
Sometimes a subject will deserve a longer video. Most of the time, however, we’d rather make one point clearly than stretch a simple lesson merely to make the video longer.
You Don’t Have to Start at 101
The curricula are designed to make sense in sequence, but they aren’t homework assignments.
If you’re interested in a particular subject, start there.
Someone approaching retirement may want to work through Pretirement from the beginning.
Someone already retired might find a Retirement lesson about purpose, relationships, travel, technology, caregiving, or legacy immediately relevant.
You can always go backward or forward from there.
The numbering is a map, not a set of prerequisites.
